FAQs
Should I choose spiked or rubber-soled cricket shoes?
Choose based primarily on the surface you play on. Spiked shoes provide stronger traction on natural grass and turf wickets, especially in wet conditions. Rubber-soled shoes are generally better suited to artificial wickets, matting, indoor cricket and harder surfaces. If you regularly play across different surfaces, shoes with removable spikes can provide more flexibility.
Do bowlers, batters and all-rounders need different cricket shoes?
Not necessarily, but your playing role can affect which features are most useful. Fast bowlers typically benefit from greater stability, cushioning and traction, while batters often prefer lighter shoes that allow quick movement between the wickets. All-rounders generally need a balance of grip, cushioning and mobility. ASICS, for example, produces cricket shoes specifically designed around the stability and traction requirements of medium and fast bowlers.
Can I wear running shoes or regular trainers for cricket?
Regular trainers may work for casual play or some indoor and synthetic surfaces, but cricket shoes are designed to provide the grip, stability and support needed for cricket-specific movements such as quick changes of direction, bowling and running between wickets. On natural turf, particularly when conditions are wet, spikes can provide considerably better traction.
Are removable spikes better than fixed spikes?
Removable spikes can be particularly useful if you play on different surfaces. Depending on the shoe, you may be able to replace metal spikes with rubber studs or remove them when playing on artificial surfaces. They also allow worn spikes to be replaced without replacing the entire shoe. Make sure the replacement spikes are compatible with your particular shoe model.
What should I look for in a good pair of cricket shoes?
Look for a combination of good fit, traction, cushioning, stability and comfort suited to your playing role and surface. Fast bowlers may prioritise stronger support and impact cushioning, while batters and fielders may prefer lighter, more flexible shoes. Players spending long periods in the field also commonly prioritise comfort and support rather than choosing solely based on weight or appearance.
