FAQs
What size cricket bat is right for me?
Bat size should primarily be based on your height and ability to comfortably control the bat. Junior bats typically range from Size 0–6, followed by Harrow, while most adults use a full-size Short Handle bat. The right size should allow you to play naturally without the bat feeling too long or difficult to manoeuvre.
How do I choose the right bat weight and pickup?
There is no single ideal bat weight for everyone. What matters more is how the bat feels when you pick it up and play your normal shots. A well-balanced bat can feel lighter than another bat of the same actual weight. If the bat slows your swing, feels difficult to control or puts strain on your wrists, it is probably too heavy for you. Whenever possible, try a few different weights and focus on balance, pickup and control rather than choosing purely by the number on the scale.
Should I choose English Willow or Kashmir Willow?
For competitive leather-ball cricket, English Willow is generally the preferred choice when budget allows. Kashmir Willow is a more affordable option and can be particularly suitable for beginners, recreational players and soft/tennis-ball cricket. Gray-Nicolls, for example, recommends Kashmir Willow as an appropriate value option for juniors starting with soft-ball cricket. Your choice should ultimately depend on the type of ball you play with, your playing level and your budget.
How many grains should a good cricket bat have?
More grains do not automatically mean a better bat. Grain count is only one aspect of the willow, and buyers should also look at the straightness and consistency of the grains, overall bat construction, pickup and performance. In one detailed Reddit buying discussion, experienced players suggested that around 6–10 grains can be perfectly adequate for a good club-level bat. Higher grain counts are often associated with premium willow, but you should not choose a bat based on grain count alone.
Do I need to knock in my cricket bat before playing?
Yes, unless the manufacturer specifically confirms that the bat is fully match-ready. Knocking-in helps condition the willow before it repeatedly faces a hard cricket ball. Even bats described as pre-prepared or partially knocked-in may still require additional preparation; Gray-Nicolls, for example, states that its bats are pre-prepared but still need knocking-in before match use. After knocking-in, gradually introducing the bat to older balls in the nets is also commonly recommended before using it against a new hard ball.
